Our Approach to Privacy
We collect as little data as possible. This site is an editorial project, not a data harvesting operation. We don't need to know everything about you. We just want to make useful guides about moving to Japan.
What We Collect
Contact form submissions: If you use our contact form, we collect your name, email address, topic selection, and message. We use this information solely to respond to your inquiry. We don't add you to any mailing list. We don't share your contact details with anyone. Your message sits in our inbox and we reply to it. That's it.
Cookie preferences: When you make a choice about cookies on our cookie banner, we store that preference in your browser's localStorage. This isn't sent to any server. It's just so we don't show you the banner again on your next visit. If you clear your browser data, the preference resets.
Anonymous reading statistics: If you accept our "Reading Stats" cookies, we collect anonymized, aggregated information about which pages are visited most frequently. This data cannot identify you personally. We use it to understand which city guides are most helpful so we can prioritize updates. If you decline cookies, we don't collect this.
Purchase data: If you buy our Japan Relocation Cost Calculator spreadsheet, the transaction is handled by our payment processor. We receive your name, email, and purchase confirmation so we can deliver the file. We do not receive or store your credit card information.
What We Don't Collect
We don't use Google Analytics. We don't use Facebook Pixel. We don't embed social media widgets that track you. We don't have advertising partnerships that require user profiling. We don't collect your IP address, browsing history, device fingerprint, or location data.
We don't have user accounts. You can't log in to our site. There's no database of users, no profile system, no tracking of individual behavior across visits.
Cookies We Use
Our cookie system has three categories:
- Basics (required): These make the site function. They include your cookie preference itself, stored in localStorage. Without this, you'd see the cookie banner on every page load.
- Reading Stats (optional, off by default): Anonymous page view counts to help us understand which content is popular. No personal data. No third-party sharing.
- Partners (optional, off by default): Only activates if you click a link to one of our partner moving services. This lets us track whether our recommendations are useful, without tracking you on any other page.
You can manage your cookie preferences at any time using the cookie banner at the bottom of the page, or by clicking "Manage" on the banner when it appears.
Third Parties
We use the following third-party services:
- Web hosting: Our site is hosted on a standard web hosting provider. They process HTTP requests to serve our pages. They may log standard server access logs (IP address, timestamp, requested page) for operational and security purposes. We don't actively analyze these logs for user behavior.
- Payment processing: If you purchase our spreadsheet, the transaction is handled by a secure payment processor. They handle your payment details under their own privacy policy.
We don't share data with advertisers, data brokers, social media platforms, or analytics companies. We don't sell your data to anyone. We never will.
Data Retention
Contact form submissions are retained for as long as necessary to complete the conversation, plus up to 12 months for reference. After that, we delete them. We don't maintain a historical archive of user communications.
Purchase records are retained for accounting and tax purposes as required by law — 7 years for US tax compliance.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Ask what data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Withdraw consent for optional data collection (via the cookie banner)
- Complain to a supervisory authority if you believe your rights have been violated

Children's Privacy
This site is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information to us, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll update the "last updated" date below. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
